This is an art installation by performance and video artist Maria Abramovic called “Spirit of Mozart.” There are 8 stainless steel movable chairs and one stationary 14 meter tall stainless steel chair (seen to the right of the smaller chairs in the photo on the right). Passers by are encouraged to use the chairs, moving them around as desired. They are an invitation to sit quietly and contemplate in a place in town that is pulsating with activity. “In the heart of Salzburg, bustling with activity, I wanted to create a place of contemplation and dedicate it to the spirit of Mozart. The spirit is something invisible, but if you erect a seat for it, the invisible becomes visible. Anyone who sits and thinks long enough will be able to enter into a connection with invisible forces.” (Or gets really wet from sitting in the rain for too long!)
